Theme of a story

     The theme of a story is what the author is trying to show you in other words, the central idea of the story. The theme is often seen as and underlying message throughout the story. The theme of a story is all the way through the story, and the characters' actions, interactions, and motivations all reflect the story's theme. "A writer presents themes in a literary piece through several ways. A writer may express a theme through the feelings of his main character about the subject he has chosen to write about. Similarly, themes are presented through thoughts and conversations of different characters". So when you're trying to recognize the theme of a story, ask yourself what the author is trying to convey through the characters and events of the story. 
     I feel the theme of divergent is you must strive to be well rounded. Having one good trait dose not make you a good person. You need to show may strong traits such as, bravery, selflessness, honesty, intelligence, and peacefulness. I knew this was a theme because to me this is what the author was trying to point out. Many times multiple themes can be pointed out.  

Character Analysis

     Character analyst , is when when you evaluate a character's traits, their role in the story, and the conflicts they experience. I chose to analyze Tris because she is our main character in Divergent. Tris is very strong-willed, determined, selfless, and a brave character. Those character traits are shown when she was the first jumper, and when she climbed the Ferris wheel. With out Tris in the story there would be know conflict. Tris being Divergent is the main conflict of this story. Tris experiences many conflicts throughout this story. Finding out she was divergent raised a big conflict because if anyone found out she would be killed. Also she had no idea why being divergent is so dangerous. Getting her through dauntless initiation was also a conflict because of the simulations and other initiates.

     The point of character analysis is to point out character traits, a characters role in a story, and conflicts they experience with explanations. Could you  do that with a different character? 

Plot and Conflict

        Plot is the story line, the sequence of events in a story. Plot changes. Conflict changed and pushed the plot forward. I feel that there are many small conflicts that overall develop the whole plot .. The plot that will with stand the entire trilogy. Plot like conflict change and both develop over time. 

During divergent you see the changes in both the plot and the conflict. In the beginning Tris is forced to chose between her home faction and a different faction that she see’s fit. She choose Dauntless. Dauntless was probably the hardest faction for her to get though initiation. Because of Tris being divergent. This is a major factor through out the plot. Now Tris must face and survive dauntless initiation. She did it, she was ranked number one out of all of the initiates. Now the plot and conflict has changed once again. Now initiation isn’t a problem, but what will come next? Can you point out a change in conflict and plot? 

Characterization

Characters are important. With out characters how would you have a book. Characters never stay the same throughout a book though. If they do they are static characters. Main characters are always dynamic. All of the character change throughout the book. Characters often grow by getting over fears, and by learning.  
Tris learns more an begins to grow and change. She learns about her gift .. Well what I view as a gift, her divergent abilities. As she learns more about divergent characteristics she beings to adapt. She learns she is divergent early on, but has know idea what is means. She must learn more with out asking or confiding in anyone. Tris learns she has to be stronger, she must work harder than the other initiates. Throughout this process she has to grow up, and change. She learns that four is also divergent which is a major growth. Another way Tris changes is she gets over a fear. Tris has a fear of intimacy, but throughout the book she grew closer and closer to four. Getting over this fear was a great growth, an amazing example of change. Who do you feel in the book has changed the most? Do you agree with me, that Tris has had the most growth or another character? 

Meaning of a title

The title. The title has an important role. It often foreshadows and, draws you to the book. A title is a story's first impression. A title creates anticipation and expectation. Its also helps to develop the conflict and plot. 
To me Divergent means you are a part of every faction. It means you show characteristics of all five factions. In the book each teen is to pick one faction for the rest of their lives to remain loyal to. They are to forget the rest because that would show weakness and un loyalty. There are five factions. Each has their own rules. Being divergent means you show qualities from each, which is very dangerous in this society. How dose the title foreshadow?  

Divergent is a main conflict in the book. Which is why I feel the book is titled divergent. Without the idea of divergence the entire books conflict and plot would be changed. The whole conflict of the book is that Tris is trying to understand what divergent means and why it is dangerous. So if divergent wasn’t apart of this society how do you think the plot and conflict would be changed throughout this book and trilogy? 

Setting of A Story

        Setting is the period in time or place in which the events of a story occur. Small details are often important. They often show foreshadowing. The setting in this chapter changes multiple time. In the beginning the setting is in the dorms, the dorms are darker then usual. Tris stated that multiple times during the beginning of this chapter. All of the initiates marched out, and were all to climb in to the train cars. They are dark as well. All of the imitates weren’t their selfs. She described the train cars as loud, and uneasy. 

Everything seemed darker. The train ride was long. After all the imitates reached their destination Tris realized they were at, Abnegation. What used to be her home faction. This used to be a warm comforting place for her. As Tris began to climb out of the train she realized how different everything was. She said it wasn’t the same, it was dark everything was boarded up. She recalled all of the places she used to see daily, and what she used to go there but, it was all so different to her. She was yet to see the worst of it. Everything got worse. The setting is always very important to a story. It often sets the tone, the mood, and is sometimes even involved in conflict. 

Analyzing Conflict

          Conflict is literature plot tension, it motivates the plot. Conflict keeps the plot evolving. The conflict brings you to the climax of the story. During this chapter of Divergent the main conflict is between all of the new initiates. Each and everyone of them all wanted to reach the number one spot. People who were ranked the lowest would be come factionless. Drew and molly were ranked number eleven and number twelve, they became factionless. Which was rewarding for Tris because Drew tried to help kill her, and Molly spread lies about her father and Abnegation. How dose the conflict effect the plot?
There are many conflicts throughout this chapter and even throughout the entire book. There are also many different types such as; man vs. man, man vs. self, man vs. fate … An example of man vs. man conflict would be. An example of man vs. self conflict would be Molly and Drew beating their self’s up about being factionless. Which types of conflict can you find, and define?
